"Your Choice" by Sophia Steed
A sunny day,
The crisp fall breeze whistled through my window.
It was finally sweater weather.
Put my makeup on, brush my hair, pour a bowl of cereal and walk out the door.
I’m ready for this day,
I can just feel how wonderful it’s going to be.
I head downtown,
for a milkshake from prince street and a bagel from market.
The perfect mixture of warm and cold on my lips, and in my hands.
Beautiful buildings surround me,
One from every era.
Couples hold hands,
And children skip by.
Then I take a closer look,
A fight broke out on queen street,
Lots of people got hurt.
I hear honking and yelling from the parking garage.
BANG! A car accident up the street,
I pray that no one gets hurt.
A homeless man,
Nothing to eat. Nothing to drink.
Not a friend to be seen.
To my left an abandoned baby in a stroller,
Crying for love from a mother.
To my right,
The stale smell of lung cancer.
What beauty, what joy it brings.
But on the inside
All there is, is sadness.
But it’s your choice,
You can focus on all that’s grey and dreary,
Or you can look at the buildings, the kids running by.
You can focus on the sweet taste of the milkshake you hold,
And the beauty that surrounds you.
