"The Pressure to Be" by Ava Hampton
Dear World,
I come to you with anger and grief.
You lie to me, and anguish my relief.
You call me beautiful, but you call me ugly,
You say I’m not authentic, what do you want from me?
You step on my confidence when I succeed,
“I just want to be someone,” I plead.
Then I realize I am somebody,
I am creative and artistic.
I am a daughter, a sister, a grandchild, a cousin, a niece, and a friend.
I am not selfish, and I am full of love.
I am authentic, this is my version of me.
You seek me to be someone that I am not,
I will not change for you.
Dear World,
Listen to our cries for acceptance!
We are who we are, do not change us.
Help us love ourselves, do not tread on us.
Let’s get along,
After all we all belong on this Earth for our purposes.
Spread love, and not hate.
We are who we are,
Accept.
