"Uncover What's Blind" by Samantha Schlegel

His first words were gentle. They came out ever so slightly, new and birthed to the surface. But they were strong and confident with a meaning much more complex than any novel. Up until now, it was a mute world for him.
He lived 18 years without speaking a word. Maybe he was shy or suffered from depression. The school knew him as the kid who never talked, the outcast per say. However, I saw more in this young man’s eyes. I knew there was more to him, more juice inside than what was poured. We all didn’t see the truth or even a small piece of the truth. I knew there was more to him then met the eye, but days crept by without a word until finally, the day we had all been waiting for, graduation, arrived. I went towards my seat and saw John was placed next to me. I took a seat.
“Hello...” he said. The conversation never ended.
Fifteen years later at my wedding, John is the one standing next to me.
